Nature is the muse for eclectic new art show

Drawn by Nature, a group art exhibition exploring the beauty and fragility of the natural world, is opening this month at The Gallery, Truro High School for Girls. The show features work from five stylistically diverse visual creatives – artists Wendy Rolt and Stuart Rowe, designers Sarah Fortescue and George Winks, and sculptor Shelley Montague – all connected by the inspiration and joy they glean from their outdoor surroundings.

Launching with an evening viewing on April 24th (6pm – 8pm), the free exhibition will then be open on 27th, 28th April and 2nd, 3rd May. The show will also feature exclusive poetry by actor, comedian and writer Edward Rowe and poet Bryony Partridge.

On the last day of the exhibition (3rd May), the work of the Drawn By Nature collective will be joined in the gallery by artworks from students of Truro High School for Girls.

This collaborative art and design event promises to be a varied and fascinating exploration of the natural world, from the wilds of Cornwall to the vibrant coral reefs of South Africa. Some works respond to the theme of nature with playfulness and colour and others through the lens of history and story.

About the artists:

Wendy Rolt’s art reflects her diverse life experiences and explores deeper meanings, capturing the essence beyond the literal. Her works in this exhibition are influenced by the natural surroundings of her home – a small farm in Cornwall where quiet and solitude are juxtaposed with wild and a sense of play.

Stuart Rowe is a Cornish artist whose work is inspired by Cornish land and seascapes. Working in paint and dry medium, he loves to capture the essence of the scenery that he spends so much time in. This latest work has been derived from a winter on Bodmin moor.

Sarah Fortescue was brought up between Cornwall and South Africa, surrounded by big open spaces and beautiful wildlife. The natural world and cultures of the world have always been the inspiration for her vibrant, colourful interior and product design.

Shelley Montague is a sculptor whose work explores fragility – from the fragility of the planet itself to the individual psyche – as a key signifier in the age of uncertainty, using materials that reference landscape and archaeology.

George Winks (Temper Studios) designs and makes idiosyncratic, contemporary furniture and household objects from a small workshop in rural Wiltshire. Learning from his materials through incessant experimentation, his pieces are quietly beautiful and intellectually fascinating.
