Wendy Rolt – Biography / Artist Statement

I am 45 and live on a wild small farm in Cornwall, down a long dirt track.  I moved here a few years ago to follow my intuition that I needed some silence and solitude to connect to nature and so to myself and my work as an artist.  This was also a step to commit fully to myself as an artist and I am loving it.

Having spent most of my life working in incredibly intense atmospheres with people, my creative response has been a gasp for air, and this helped me to breath and carry on.  However since moving to Cornwall creativity has become my breath and deeply entwined with how I live and what I am surrounded by.  My artistic response to what I feel or see or experience or think about is slower and more present, mostly.  I enjoy the making of art and it helps me work out and respond to what it means to be alive.

My work varies as I desire to explore and respond with my hands. I am drawn to wood and touch and paint and sewing and chiselling and pattern and mark making which says here I am, my one precious life lived.  Composition and shape; that a piece really works aesthetically, is very important.  I am inspired by the boldness of Paula Rego and Kathe Kollwitz amongst others and continually challenged by being authentic as an artist, as well as how connection with the artwork by both the artist and viewer grows.

Having never formally trained I have sought out various inspiring artists/teachers and learnt by copying their work or going to courses or lessons by them over many years.  I have enjoyed putting on shows for over 15 years.  I have not made my own biological  family and making art to me is an alternative way in the world of what it means to create life as a human, it is to be challenged up close and also to nurture something made from the soul.

These words found in the Tate in St Ives Cornwall reflect much of my experience and desire as an artist and human being alive still today.
