The Tevi Workshops
Nurturing the artist and their creative practice beyond the studio.
Think of a specific plant, flower or tree; it is unique and part of a larger landscape. Its environment affects it; does it have what is needs to flourish? How much light, how much water? Does it require protection, pruning, a wall to grow up?
Tevi is the Cornish word for ‘grow’ and this is what we hope to do for artists in this day-long workshop. We will see you both as an individual and as part of a larger artistic ecosystem, helping you to find your voice and aiding you in the best way to flourish in the professional landscape.
If you’re an artist who wants to better understand ‘why’ you create the work you do, if you’re unsure about how to communicate this clearly, or looking for guidance about how to get your work seen, then you might be in the right place. This day-long workshop led by art writer Kate Reeve-Edwards and professional artist Wendy Rolt will help you to consolidate what your work expresses, alongside giving you actionable steps to professionalise your creative practice.
The day includes:
– Practical tips on how to write your statement
– A one-on-one session with Kate discussing your motivations, methods and process to help draw together a clear artist statement for you
– A group crit of your work
– An appraisal of your website and social media with steps for change & development
– A nourishing lunch
– Discussion and advice on how to approach galleries: what & what not to do
– An hour zoom call follow up to discuss your statement
– An opportunity to meet a new community of artists
Price: £100 PP

I suggest we use the above for any social media captions and I will create a specific page on my website with the above details listed. I’ve also created some options for a carousel Instagram post that we can use for promotion. I’ve used natural / flora backgrounds to link to this idea of nurture and growth, but we can get a more specific ‘brand pack’ together after we have collected images from our first session.
Wendy has crafted a workshop that can be done with, and adjusted to, children and adults. Having worked both teaching art to children and also amongst adults, some with complex lives and learning difficulties, she is experienced in adapting her work to her audience. She has run such workshops training up NHS medical students, in schools and in drop-in centres for adults.
‘A line is a dot that went for a walk. A drawing is simply a line going for a walk. Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see.’ Paul Klee
The workshop uses art as a tool to engage with our emotions, to slow down, explore the different feelings we may experience, notice how our bodies hold these and then use Paul Klee’s idea of taking a line on a walk to spend time making together. This usually involves drawing and collage and can be done as a one-off session or become a piece of work that continues to evolve.
This workshop not only breaks down the barriers around needing to be good at art to be creative, it also opens up conversation about emotions and feelings that can often be buried or denied. Difficulties with mental health can often start to heal amongst this process. In making a low key unintrusive space uses art Wendy to open a door and let in some of the often much needed fresh air around what goes on inside us and to connect it to our outer lives.
“Wendy created a wonderfully inclusive atmosphere with the young girls in her workshop. She was able to answer their questions with kindness and care. Her careful planning and presentation techniques meant that each child was engaged and produced a varied and creative outcome. The workshop was accessible to all, and Wendy celebrated the girls’ different approaches to the task. The workshop enabled the girls to interweave art therapy with drawing and mark making outcomes to great success!”
Art Teacher Laura Graven, Truro High School for Girls
If you are interested in Wendy coming to your school or putting on a workshop for a group in public space please get in touch to talk more. Costs vary and Wendy is happy to work with you to apply for grants where needed.
Being based in Cornwall she tries to work locally. You can contact Wendy here.
